Abstract

Articles form an essential grammatical category in both the English and German languages. They perform the functions of identifying nouns and distinguishing between specific or general ones. Even though English and German are the members of the same language family, their article systems are different in every aspect, such as structure and usage. The English articles are basic and unchangeable, while the German articles vary according to sex, quantity, and case. The present work analyzes English and German articles in types, forms, functions, and usages. It concludes that German articles are more complicated which, in turn, leads to difficulties for learners of the language. Hence, it is not only important but also beneficial for students, teachers, and linguists to be aware of such differences.
